SA380TX - Firmware Upgrade using dUpgrade

Prerequisites

dUpgrade can be used to upgrade firmware on one or multiple SA380TX devices over an IP network. This network can typically be:

  • Over air, using a 2G or 3G wireless connection
  • Over a wired Ethernet LAN network
  • via a point-to-point Ethernet link between SA380TX and a computer.

Before you can upgrade any SA380TX logger using dUpgrade, you must know the IP address of the SA380TX you wish to upgrade,

Whilst it is possible to find the device IP address from the SA380TX display, clearly this only works if you are on site. It is therefore important to keep good records of SA380TX IP addresses if firmware is to be upraded from a remote location.

dUpgrade is presently only supported on the Windows operating system

Network Requirements

In order to be able to use dUpgrade with the SA380TX in this way, the following network requirements must be met.

  • The IP address of the SA380TX must be "visible" to the device using dUpgrade (Eg. there must be no NAT between SA380TX and dUpgrade machine)
  • The following ports and services must be permitted by the network firewall,
    • TCP - Port 21

    • TCP - Port 65000

    • TCP - Port 80
    • UDP - Port 40134

How to find the "Over Air" and Ethernet IP addresses

The IP address of the SA380TX's wired Ethernet connection and GSM modem connection can be discovered on the "About" screen on the user Interace.

  • Auto IP / Statis IP is the address of the wired Ethernet connection
  • GPRS IP is the address of the wireless connection

How to connect "Point-to-Point" between a computer and SA380TX

Please follow the intsructions on this page: Make a Point-to-Point Ethernet Connection to a SA380TX. Make a note of the IP Address. You will need it shortly

Obtaining dUpgrade

dUpgrade can be downloaded from the Mpec Firmware Downloads Page

Ensure you download the correct version to support your Windows 32-bit ot 64-bit operarting system

Double click on the executable (.exe) to install. Note that a password is required for Cyber Security reasons.

The password is only distributed to authorised users.

Email support@mpec.co.uk to request the password. Please provide your name and contact details.

Select Loggers to Upgrade

dUpgrade can upgrade multiple data loggers of all Mpec variants, or just a single SA380TX.

The first step to upgrading any number of dataloggers is to enter a list of IP addresses. This can be done two-ways:

Manual IP address entry

Click the Add logger(s) button

Each logger IP address is entered on a new line:

Import IP addresses from file

Alternativley you may import a .txt or .csv file to select a large range of IP addresses. Useful for data-dumps from spreadsheets etc.

IP address should be entered either one-per-line:

10.0.4.64
10.0.4.65
10.0.4.66

or comma-seperated:

10.0.4.64, 10.0.4.65, 10.0.4.66

Query Loggers

To confirm that SA380TX devices are available for upgrade, you should, but are not required to use the Query loggers button to check that there is a device available on the IP address you entered that is the device you are expecting, and available on the network.

dUpgrade will return the site name, firmware version, and datalogger type for each IP address, if a device with a matching IP address is found.

Upgrade the SA380TX

Get the correct firmware package

The first stage is to ensure you have the correcr firmware package from the Mpec Firmware Downloads Page.

If you are unsure which firmware pacakage is required, please follow the step-by-step guide found here: SA380TX Firmware Upgrade Support

It is really important to get the right firmware package:

  • It must be for the correct SA380TX vairant (Mod State 1/2 or Modstate 3+)
  • In the case of .ZIP files, it must be packaged correctly for use with dUpgrade
  • In the case of .UPG files. You must have an SA380TX MS3+, running firmware version 1144 or later.

Open the Firmware Package

Using the Open Firmware Package... button, select the .ZIP package or .UPG pacakge you just downloaded.

dUpgrade will detect the data logger type and firmware version contained within the ZIP file. If dUpgrade fails to detect a valid firmware image, it is indicative of the wrong package being downloaded from the website.

Upgrade Loggers

To actually perform the upgrade, simply his the Upgrade loggers button.

Firmware Upgrade can take a very long time, especially on 2G GSM connections! Please be patient.

dUpgrade is persistant. It shall continue to attempt upgrade until upgrade is complete. If you wish to abort you must press the Stop Upgrading button during the upgrade process.

Upon successfull upgrade, the Status for each SA380TX logger shall say Complete
